1. Light Weighting

The dark art of adding lightness

Removing weight has a universal benefit across all automotive performance goals including improving corning speed, acceleration and braking.  Additionally, removing weight without removing strength will increase reliability and reduce wear by reducing stress on every dynamic part.  Less weight for brakes to stop, less weight for suspension to dampen, less weight for the crankshaft to support.  URGE designs is maniacal about finding ways to reduce weight.  Our brake kits remove disc weight vs OEM which many would consider reducing performance.  However, we significantly improved heat dissipation through increased air flow, our brake kits and rotors are able to support higher horsepower S2000 track cars reliably while reducing rotational weight improving acceleration, corning and braking.  Other brake kits add rotational weight to achieve the same benefits.

Another light weighting example is our stroker kit is 35% lighter than OEM reciprocating parts and 25% vs other kits.  This translates, faster engine response, faster acceleration and 25% less force on the crankshaft improving reliability for a 9000 RPM 99mm stroke.  Most parts we offer from suspension, to headers, to exhaust, ITBs or racing seats are all have a primary performance focus with an additional benefit of significantly reducing weight.  We also offer the best all-around automotive batteries in the business whose primary benefit is reducing weight.

2. Improved Dynamics

Did you know a car with 10% more mechanical grip will typically go faster around a track than a car with twice the power?  The best thing you can do to your car is improve mechanical grip and overall car control.  Why mechanical grip?  Well, we are not aero dynamists and mechanical grip improves cornering, braking and acceleration at all speeds, not just high speeds.  We are not saying you shouldn’t improve aerodynamic downforce, just that mechanical grip has a wider benefit range.  URGE designs offers the widest custom wheels on the market, which has proven in many racing series to be the largest factor in making a car quicker.  It is the first thing you should do beyond being a better driver.  Additionally, we can pull quite a bit of rotation a weight vs OEM wheels.

Suspension is easily the second most important car improvement you can as cars are quicker when they balanced and under control.  Ohlins are the world leaders in suspension and dampening and have more national and world championships than any other suspension manufacture.  URGE designs offers a range of custom Ohlins options that improve the S2000 balance will significantly increasing car control and driver confidence. Finally, your car needs to be safe and if you cannot reliably and consistently stop the car, you shouldn’t be going fast.  Brakes are a weak spot for the OEM S2000 system and should be a key component to update.

3. Engine Efficiency

Engine efficiency may not be the first improvement you should make on your car, but increasing power is that final step to maximize your S2000 potential.  Exhaust is always the first step in improving engine efficiency as it is the most restrictive part of the engine and it has the largest potential for reducing weight.  We have a unique and patented system that scavenges mid ranges power improving the weakest part of the S2000 torque curve.  The S2000 was designed to be top end with a sacrificed low and midrange torque.  The majority of our engine design is focused on increasing mid-range torque while maintaining as much torque as possible up to redline.

Focusing on mid-range aligns with our focus of improving engine response, which is often overlooked.  Most performance part providers focus on largest dimeter exhausts and throttles, highest lift cams and highest flowing heads.  If the motor doesn’t have the displacement or compression to support larger parameters, it will feel lazy.  A normally aspirated engine with too large part sizing will feel like it has turbo lag.  The Stock F20C will not rev quickly below 5,000 RPM and typical engine mod design will make that worse.  You cant see engine response on a dyno, but you will feel it in the car and see it on trap speeds at the end of a straight.

As we noted above, the S2000 had the production car record for power per displacement at 120 HP/liter for 12 years.  The Ferrari 458 took that crown in 2011 at 125 HP/liter and the current record is shared between the retired 458 Speciale at 132 HP/liter and Porsche GT3 RS at 130 HP/liter.  A Ferrari 458 with bolt ons can achieve ~140 HP/liter.  In the Future, the Aston Martin Valkyrie will hit 153 HP/liter with a 11,000 RPM redline and the Gordon Murry Automotive T.50 will achieve 164 HP/liter with a 12,000 RPM redline.  Urge designs will get the F20C somewhere between 150 and 160 hp/liter with a 9000 RPM redline.  We look forward to delivering that soon.
