Essex-AP Racing Competition BBK
GET 10% OFF WHEN YOU BUY 2 OR MORE ITEMS, EACH PRICED AT $750 OR MORE!Your car’s brakes can only stop as quickly as your front tires allow. The pad/rotor friction determines how effectively you can reach the tire limit and control the vehicle at that limit. Once the tire limit is reached, the brake system must repeatedly control the vehicle at that limit indefinitely without failing.
At URGE, we understand the importance of a reliable and robust brake system, and our Essex brake kit reflects that. Each component is designed to withstand abuse and deliver reliable performance in the most challenging driving conditions. While no part can be considered failure-proof, our Essex brake kit offers unparalleled durability and weight savings, making it the optimal choice for S2000 enthusiasts.
Choose the URGE Essex brake kit for a brake system that delivers exceptional performance and reliability in the most challenging driving scenarios. Our brake kit reduces unsprung and rotational weight, providing improved handling and acceleration. With the URGE Essex brake kit, you can rest assured that your brakes will perform optimally, giving you the confidence to push your S2000 to its limits.
Forged Aluminum 4 Piston Calipers
The URGE Essex brake kit features high-performance AP Racing CP8350 calipers with 41 & 38mm piston diameters, delivering approximately 7% more brake torque than the OEM brake system. This enhanced brake torque ensures improved stopping power and shorter stopping distances, providing greater control and confidence on the track.
Moreover, the AP Racing CP8350 calipers utilized in the URGE Essex brake kit are the same calipers employed in prominent racing series worldwide, including the ARCA/SCA, ASA, PASS, SRL late model racing series, and European rally car competitions. This highlights the exceptional racing pedigree of the URGE Essex brake kit, which is unparalleled by many other S2000 brake kits available in the market.
Stainless Steel Pistons with Anti-Knockback Springs
The CP8350 caliper employed in the URGE Essex brake kit boasts track-focused features that are absent in typical “sport” brake kits. Even with high-temperature brake pads and thick rotors, brakes can still fade due to the transfer of heat from the caliper pistons into the brake fluid, causing it to boil.
To mitigate this issue, the CP8350 caliper features steel pistons, which are 15 times less thermally conductive than aluminum pistons found in many “sport” brake kits. This helps to reduce heat transfer to the brake fluid, resulting in improved brake performance and reduced risk of brake fade.
Moreover, the CP8350 caliper features an anti-knockback spring that keeps the pistons extended and the pads in contact with the rotor during hard cornering. Without this feature, the pad may become dislodged from the rotor, requiring the driver to double-tap the brakes to remount the pad. This delay in brake torque can be a critical issue in high-performance driving scenarios, impacting the driver’s control and confidence.
60 Vane, Floating Rotors
First and foremost, let’s address the elephant in the room: the URGE Essex brake kit features 299mm rotors, which is the same diameter as the OEM system. However, don’t let the size fool you; these rotors are more than capable of handling the abuse of high-performance driving. In fact, the CP3862 rotors utilized in the URGE Essex brake kit are the same rotors used on late model oval cars with 500 HP, weighing 2800 lbs and subject to frequent hard braking on short tracks. If they can handle that, they can certainly handle your track S2000.
The key to their superior performance is the 60 vane count, which is 150% more than OEM and 20-50% more than other brake kits. The higher vane count ensures more efficient airflow and increased surface area for better heat dissipation, despite their smaller diameter. In fact, the CP3862 rotor’s innovative design delivers superior heat dissipation compared to larger, heavier rotors.
Moreover, the AP Racing CP3862 rotors are mounted on a full floating hat, allowing for thermal expansion and reducing stress that causes warping and cracks, leading to rotor failure. Additionally, the CP3862 rotor utilizes proprietary AP Racing metallurgy, further resisting cracks. This emphasizes the importance of material selection in brake rotor design, as it plays a crucial role in rotor performance and durability.
Lastly, the patented AP Racing J Hook pattern on the rotors maximizes pad feel by maximizing leading edges and distributes surface heat better than straight slots or drilled holes. This unique design further enhances the performance and reliability of the URGE Essex brake kit.
~14 lbs total weight reduction
Each caliper weighs 4.8 lbs vs 10+ lbs for OEM, reducing unsprung weight by nearly ~11 lbs. The rotors with custom floating hats weigh 13 lbs vs 14.4 for OEM, saving another ~3 lbs of unsprung and rotational weight. The combined 14 lbs of total weight reduction is a significant and will improve both handling and acceleration. Another reason we chose a rotor size of 299mm over a 325mm rotor is the weight savings of up to 5lbs per rotor. Unessarily heavier rotors can add significant rotatoinal and unsprung weight reducing acceleratoin, suspension dynamics and increase effective mass increasing stoping distances.
Spiegler Lines
The URGE Essex Designed AP Racing Competition Kits are completed by Spiegler Brake lines, which are produced in quality-controlled facilities throughout the US and Europe. These brake lines feature connoting banjos with a stress-free torsion fitting system, ensuring better alignment with the caliper and brake plumbing.
The DuPont Teflon inner lining of Spiegler lines is another standout feature, which offers superior durability and heat resistance. In addition, Spiegler lines feature a heavier gauge stainless steel braid that reduces line flex and provides improved brake feel. The braids are wrapped in an abrasion-resistant coating that minimizes the potential for snags or damages to the lines.
Overall, Spiegler Brake lines are an essential component of the URGE Essex Designed AP Racing Competition Kits, providing unparalleled durability, heat resistance, and brake feel. Trust Spiegler lines to deliver optimal performance and reliability for your S2000.
Reduced Track & Operating Costs
The Essex Bespoke brake kit, utilizing the high-performance AP Racing CP8350 calipers, addresses two common problems that S2000 drivers encounter: cracked rotors and frequent pad changes. By accepting a 20mm pad in a common shape, the CP8350 calipers provide a wider selection of pad options and significantly reduce costs. These thicker pads have 20-60% more thickness than typical pads, resulting in longer replacement intervals and lower long-term pad costs. Additionally, the thicker pads offer more thermal capacity, leading to a substantial reduction in brake fade.
Moreover, the Essex Bespoke brake kit includes AP Racing CP3862 rotors, which are used in a variety of professional racing series worldwide. These rotors cost only $173 to replace, making them the most cost-effective 2-piece rotor available on the market. In comparison to other rotors, the CP3862 rotor costs 20-50% less, taking into account frequent 1-piece rotor replacements or expensive 2-piece rotor replacements, thin brake pads, and track time lost due to changing cracked rotors, worn pads, or waiting for brakes to cool in the pits. As a result, the Essex Bespoke brake kit may pay for itself in a relatively short period.
“Just wanted to post a quick review and pictures of my newly installed Essex BBK. In summary, if you’re on the fence, do yourself a favor and purchase this kit. The feel, responsiveness and feedback puts the stock brakes to shame.
My setup: MY06, 275 NT01 square on 17×10, aero front/rear, 2900 lbs w/o driver, supercharged ~350 whp, Tein SRCs
The parts arrived on Friday, installed on Saturday and tracked at Buttonwillow on Sunday. The guys over at Urge made an effort to get me this kit before my event. It was a very busy weekend, installing brakes and doing other stuff on the car. The installation of the kit was very easy and seamless. You really don’t need the instructions, aside from getting the torque spec on the radial caliper nuts & caliper mounting bracket bolts. The Spiegler lines came with this nifty rubber cap which you install after removing the stock line from the flare fitting. It was a nice feature to prevent making a mess and draining your reservoir while you install the new lines. The banjo fitting can also be clocked anyway you like, if need be.” Full review here
“Brakes performed flawlessly. Bias was spot on and feel was great. No change to driving style or pedal position. They did allow me to brake a little later due to the power and consistency…“
“The Urge Design AP kit had the same consistent feel from the first stop to the last stop of the weekend after nine 20-minute sessions. I dropped my fastest laptime from 1:30.3 to a 1:28.1…”
“So far, the rotors are also holding up to severe track abuse. Pacific Raceways has several high speed sections followed by heavy braking zones including slowing from 147 mph to 70 mph for Turn 2 and slowing from 120 mph to 45 mph downhill for Turn 3. These were tested on my TT2 S2000 which has 369 whp, weighs 2760 lbs with driver, and runs on Hoosiers. Won TT2 on Saturday and Sunday….” Full review here
“Hi all, this is my first time posting a review. Pardon me if I did not do a good job, but I must do this to give credit to URGE for bringing this kit to the s2k community. I have installed this kit for two months and recently I have the chance to test out this kit on a local track. All I can say that the reviews given by 99SH and pboi are true about this excellent brake kit. Installation is a breeze as the instructions are clear and illustrated. I did not remove the brake dust shield as I have brake ducts…“
“…On the whole, the Essex brake kit delivers what it promises. I am not going to repeat the advantages URGE posted on their website. What is not mentioned is the excellent customer service provided by URGE. They are prompt in replying to any queries and very honest with their products. I will definitely deal with them again.” Full review here
